Catherine Rafenberg was born in 1955 in Paris. She lives and works in Quimper. 

 

The work of Catherine Rafenberg is to be resituated in the history of the nude, which begins in Antiquity, continues and is transformed by becoming the first compulsory apprenticeship in painting academies.

 

It was at the Beaux Arts in Paris that she discovered the pleasure of fast, powerful, compact drawing, true vital writing, the outpouring of the line as an essential movement is at the heart of her daily gestures. The momentum of these curves integrates the color pigments whose dominance varies according to a strong and rich palette.

 

From the supple roundness of the composition are born Venuses, sometimes modest, chaste and pure, outside of original sin in harmony with the cosmos, sometimes profane and provocative, incarnations of carnal appetite, the intoxication of amorous transports and the temptations of lust. Closer to the colored masses of La Brucke, the rhythmic line is in keeping with the rawness of Rembrandt or Schiele. Catherine Rafenberg a virtuoso of color.
